Harlan Chiropractic & Acupuncture

Dr. Harlan with girl patientFrom day one, a chiropractor can check your child’s spine and make sure there is no pressure on their nervous system. Since the nervous system controls every function of the body, it must be clear for anyone to enjoy the best of health—babies included! You can start care early in your child’s life. We recommend you stop by on your way home from the hospital so your baby can have a quick check with the softest touch from Dr. Harlan.

Why Birth Is Traumatic

When a baby is born, there are 60 pounds of pressure placed on their neck. That goes whether the birth is vaginal or a C-section. Your doctor’s job is simple: get your baby out as quickly as possible and make sure Mom and Baby are both stabilized. That means there could be some pulling and twisting involved. From this, there can be interference in the baby’s nervous system.

The hospital will likely give your baby a clean bill of health. Everything looks okay. Dr. Harlan can check them to make sure there is no lingering trauma from birth that will affect your child’s health. Chiropractors are the only health professionals that deal exclusively with improving the function of the nervous system.

You might notice that your baby can’t turn their head to one side or has a hard time feeding on a single side. Some babies might even have a lack of function in a hand or arm, or have a reduced sucking reflex.

Often, birth trauma results in what is called brachial plexus disorders. It’s a way of saying that the nerves in the baby’s neck and arm become overstretched. As a result, their neck, arm and hand function can be seriously affected.

We’ll recommend that you bring your child in from time to time to have regular checkups. As they begin lying on their tummy, sitting up, walking and running, it’s normal that their spines are affected by trauma. Then there are considerations like heavy backpacks and how children are beginning to play sports earlier in life. We’ll only need to see them about once a month to make sure everything is working as it should.

You don’t need any more than two fingers and the pressure you’d use to squeeze a grape to adjust our youngest patients. Babies tend to sleep right through it! There is no aggressive movement involved. If your child is older, Dr. Harlan will get on their level and involve them, so they feel comfortable.

Some parents notice an instant difference after an adjustment. In fact, 44% report that their kids sleep better after getting adjusted!

Our Many Pediatric Success Stories

At Harlan Chiropractic & Acupuncture, we’ve had several favorite pediatric cases over the years—one involved twin babies who didn’t have a great range of motion. The doctors said it was the result of the way the babies had been positioned in the womb.

Their caregivers, pediatrician and parents all noticed that the development of their eyes and ears wasn’t quite up to a normal level. At daycare, they were colicky, fussing and wouldn’t eat or sleep. Mom and Dad weren’t sure what to do and brought their children to Dr. Harlan, who helped them with gentle adjustments.

Another case involved a 6-year-old girl who had regular nosebleeds. The medical doctor said it was normal. Dr. Harlan began adjusting the girl’s mid-back and neck, and the nosebleeds went away. Interference in the nerves of the girl’s upper neck was affecting her face. With a precise adjustment, Dr. Harlan cleared the interference.
